Ultimate Guide to Marketing Consultant Costs in the UK
If you’re thinking about bringing in outside marketing help, the question ‘how much does a marketing consultant cost’ comes up.
However, the honest answer is it depends on what you actually need.
You deserve real numbers, so let’s start with ranges and then explain what moves them.
In 2026, how much does a marketing consultant cost? Additionally, UK marketing consultants typically charge £75-£200+ per hour. They also bill £500-£1,500+ per day. Fixed project fees range from a few hundred to several thousand pounds, depending on scope.
Senior, specialist and London-based consultants sit at the top of those ranges.

The main pricing models
- Hourly. Suits small, defined tasks or ad-hoc advice. Simple, but can get expensive and hard to predict for larger work.
- Day rate. Common for audits, workshops and strategy sprints, typically £500–£1,500+ for an experienced consultant.
- Project fee. A fixed price for a defined deliverable (a strategy, a website, a campaign). Best when the scope is clear, because you know the cost upfront.
- Monthly retainer. For ongoing support, this shades into fractional leadership territory (more on that below).
What drives the price
- Experience and specialism. A generalist charges less than a specialist with a proven track record in your exact channel or sector.
- Scope – advice vs execution. Strategy-only advice costs less per project than hands-on implementation, but implementation delivers more done-for-you.
- Location. London commands a premium; regional consultants (including here in Bristol and the South West) often offer the same seniority for less.
- Seniority of the individual. A former head of marketing solving a strategic problem is priced differently from a freelancer executing tasks.
Consultant vs agency vs fractional CMO
This is the choice most businesses are really making, and the labels blur so here’s the distinction that matters:
- A marketing consultant typically diagnoses problems and hands you a strategy or recommendations. Great when you know you need expert direction on a specific question.
- An agency executes channels for you but works across many clients and rarely owns your whole strategy.
- A fractional CMO / marketing director embeds in your business part-time and owns the marketing function and the growth number. Best when you need ongoing leadership, not a one-off deliverable. (I’ve written about what a fractional CMO is and what one costs if that’s where you’re heading.)
Consultant vs agency vs fractional CMO
Match the spend to the problem:
- Need a specific question answered or a strategy built? A project or day-rate consultant is efficient.
- Need channels run week to week? An agency or specialist freelancer fits.
- Need someone senior to own marketing and move the number? A fractional leader is usually the highest-leverage option and often better value than a full-time hire.
The cheapest option is rarely the best value, and the most expensive isn’t automatically the most effective. The real test is whether the person can move a metric that matters to your business.
