It’s the first question every founder asks, and most guides bury the answer. So here it is up front.
In 2026, a UK fractional CMO costs £3,000–£8,000 per month on a one- to three-day-a-week retainer. Alternatively, it is £750–£2,000 per day for project work. This reflects the fractional CMO cost UK.
Senior operators and London engagements sit at the top of those ranges. Light-touch advisory sits below them. Over a year, that usually works out at a fraction of a full-time hire.

Let’s break down what actually drives the number.
Monthly retainer (the dominant UK model). A fixed monthly fee covers a set number of days, usually reviewed quarterly. Most engagements land at £3,000-£8,000 a month for one to three days a week. It gives both sides predictable cash flow and keeps the relationship strategic. As a rule of thumb, a retainer below ~£3,000 a month usually buys a marketing-manager-grade resource, not genuine CMO-level leadership.
Day rate. Better suited to defined projects, an audit, a strategy build, interim cover. UK day rates commonly run £750-£2,000, rising higher for specialist London operators in fintech, SaaS or PE-backed businesses. For ongoing leadership, a retainer is usually better value than counting days.

This is where the model earns its keep. A full-time UK marketing director or CMO costs far more than the salary alone. Once you load in employer National Insurance (up to 15% since April 2025), pension, benefits and recruitment fees, a senior permanent hire commonly runs £150,000 well into several hundred thousand in year one, before you’ve accounted for the months-long hiring cycle and the risk of a bad fit. This relates to the fractional CMO cost UK and the overall value of interim leadership.
A fractional CMO gives you the same level of leadership for the days you actually need, with no employer NI, no pension liability, no equity dilution and no recruitment fee. For a business that’s growing but not yet ready to carry a senior salary full-time, the gap between those two numbers is capital you can put into product, hiring or runway instead.
The fee usually covers the person’s time, not your ad budget, tool subscriptions or agency mark-ups. A good fractional leader will be transparent about what sits inside and outside the retainer from day one.
The real question isn’t “what’s the rate?” it’s “can this person own my growth number and move it?” A senior operator who adds even a few points of revenue growth pays for themselves many times over. A cheap one who produces activity without direction costs you far more than their invoice.
