Search is changing faster than at any point since Google launched. More people now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overviews a question. They often get a synthesised answer without clicking a single link. This shift means traditional ranking signals are evolving. In the context of AEO vs SEO, marketers must adapt.
But many marketers still design content for scrollable lists of blue links. That approach shrinks in a changing search landscape where intent and answers matter more than ever. If you want to lead, focus on providing concise, authoritative responses that align with user questions.
Three acronyms describe the new landscape. Here’s what each means, in plain English, and what to do about it.
SEO asks “does my page rank?” AEO asks “is my content the answer?” GEO asks “does the AI cite me?” They target different surfaces of the same search journey. This highlights AEO vs SEO considerations. Readers compare results and measure usefulness. Understanding differences helps optimize content.

This isn’t a future problem. Where AI Overviews appear in Google, they can cut the click-through rate of even the top-ranking page dramatically, analysis of hundreds of thousands of keywords has shown top-position clicks falling by more than half on AI Overview terms between 2023 and 2025.
At the same time, a growing share of people skip search engines entirely and ask an AI tool first.
Translation: you can rank #1 and still lose the visit unless you’re also the source the AI quotes.
Here’s the reassuring part most guides overlook. Google itself has said that optimising for AI is still SEO, and the research agrees. The tactics that earn AI citations are the same ones good marketers already value:
You don’t need three separate strategies. Build one system: a strong, authoritative, well-structured site with clear answers, real evidence, proper schema, and a recognisable expert behind it. That single foundation can rank on Google, win the answer box, and get cited by AI.
The businesses that treat AEO and GEO as core strategy in 2026, not an afterthought, will own their categories in AI answers. While competitors are still optimising for a click that’s disappearing.
This is exactly the work I do: building search and AI-visibility foundations that compound. If you want to know whether your brand currently shows up when someone asks AI about your category, and what to do if it doesn’t, explore my services → or book an AI-visibility conversation →.
